WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

The space agency NASA is accepting applications for flight directors at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, through Monday, October 12. These leaders will oversee human spaceflight missions to the International Space Station, the Moon via Artemis, and future crewed trips to Mars. Flight directors manage real-time missions and risks by leading teams of flight controllers, astronauts, and commercial and international partners.

Emily Nelson, who leads the flight director office at the Johnson center, stated that the role requires integration experts who can unite diverse teams. Applicants must hold United States citizenship and a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics. Candidates also need professional experience that involves making critical choices in high-pressure settings.

While many past directors worked as flight controllers first, that background is not mandatory. The agency plans to announce the new choices before the end of the year. Selected candidates will complete training in flight control, spacecraft systems, operational leadership, and risk management.
