NASA, International Partners Advance Work on Space Crops
NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and the German Aerospace Center signed a joint statement of intent to initiate coordinated, preparatory work for an Earth-based demonstrator focused on cultivating crops on the Moon.
NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, and the German Aerospace Center signed a joint statement of intent to initiate coordinated, preparatory work for an Earth-based demonstrator focused on cultivating crops on the Moon. Titled the Lunar Agriculture Module-Ground Test Demonstrator, the project aims to develop technologies for growing space crops and analyze their performance in atmospheres and controlled environments that mirror conditions anticipated at Moon Base.
This initiative supports the broader goal of establishing infrastructure near the Moon’s South Pole to maintain an enduring human presence and prepare for future missions to Mars. Space crops are intended to supply deep space crews with whole-food nutrition, enhance dietary variety, absorb carbon dioxide, generate oxygen, and recycle water as missions extend farther from Earth.
Additionally, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center has conducted related plant research, such as the Advanced Plant Imaging project, where horticulture scientist Blake Costine adjusted moisture sensors inside the Plant Production Area on April 17, 2023, utilizing hyperspectral cameras to evaluate plant health.
