Where will the US Space Academy be based? NASA wants class to start by 2028

NASA is moving forward with plans to establish a U.S. Space Academy, a new institution designed to train scientists, engineers, astronauts, and military personnel for the next era of space exploration. Announced in August 2026 by executive order, the academy will operate under NASA’s leadership, distinguishing it from traditional military academies like West Point. Its mission is to strengthen America’s workforce in critical technical fields and ensure long-term leadership in space.

States have until October 26, 2026 to submit proposals for hosting the academy, with NASA emphasizing that the chosen location will be “foundational to its success.” Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with a temporary campus opening in 2028 to welcome the first class of 300 students. A permanent campus, complete with classrooms, laboratories, residences, and recreational facilities, is slated to be ready by 2031.

The initiative reflects both national security and educational priorities, aiming to inspire young Americans to pursue careers in aerospace and advanced sciences.
