WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

Solidigm, the flash memory unit of SK Hynix, is reportedly seeking U.S. approval to send American chipmaking equipment to its Dalian facility in China. According to Reuters sources, this move is part of a plan to build a new semiconductor factory in the U.S., with upstate New York under consideration.

Solidigm reportedly aims to install more equipment into spare space at the Dalian factory to boost production of NAND flash memory chips. NAND chips are used in solid-state storage drives for devices ranging from laptops to artificial intelligence data centers. Research firm Trendforce expects NAND prices to rise between 15% and 20% in the fourth quarter amid high demand.

SK Hynix told TechCrunch it is not expanding capacity at the Dalian Mod B facility and that equipment installation is done in consultation with the U.S. government. The U.S. has enforced strict export restrictions on chipmaking equipment to China since October 2022. Additionally, Solidigm is reportedly preparing for a U.S. initial public offering in 2027 that could raise about $10 billion.
