Startup founders Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini are developing artificial intelligence designed to automate and accelerate the chip design process. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt on Wednesday, the founders of Ricursive Intelligence explained that their startup builds AI that can design chips, learn from each iteration, and improve subsequent layouts.
Goldie stated that compute demand will surge by at least 10,000 times over the next five years. To address this compute crisis without building massive numbers of new data centers, the startup aims to create chips that use bandwidth, wafers, and manufacturing fabs much more efficiently. The founders noted that AI challenges traditional methods by discovering unconventional layouts, such as a circular arrangement produced by their previously developed system, AlphaChip.
Instead of partitioning chips into smaller blocks, their approach optimizes entire chips to create intricate patterns like wave-like designs. Reducing chip design timelines from years to roughly a week could make custom chips financially viable for diverse applications such as space, augmented reality, virtual reality, and biological computing.
The founders plan to share more details about their wave-like designs in the future.
