WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

NASA will host a news conference on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to preview two upcoming spacewalks aimed at finishing solar array installations on the International Space Station. The briefing begins at 2 p.m. EDT from the Johnson Space Center in Houston and will stream live online. During the session, operations integration manager Gaurang Patel and spacewalk flight director Garrett Hehn will discuss the upcoming operations.

U.S. media must contact the Houston newsroom by Monday afternoon, Oct. 19, to attend in person or request telephone dial-in details. On Thursday, Oct. 29, NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk will perform U.S. spacewalk 100. They will exit the Quest airlock to install an International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array, known as an IROSA, on the 2A electrical power channel.

A week later, on Thursday, Nov. 5, the pair will conduct spacewalk 101 to deploy the eighth and final IROSA on the 3B channel. These final two roll-out solar arrays will boost the station's power generation capacity from 160 kilowatts to about 215 kilowatts, representing an increase of up to 30%. The additional power will support critical station operations, including its eventual deorbit.
