Munich-based database startup CedarDB has announced the limited availability of CedarDB Cloud following beta testing. The launch was revealed on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, where the company is competing in the Startup Battlefield. CedarDB is a spinout from the Technical University of Munich based on the Umbra research project.
Founded by five Umbra researchers, the database engine is designed to handle both analytical questions and transactional records on a single system. Co-founder and CEO Moritz Sichert told TechCrunch that the rise of agentic AI has increased demand for this dual capability, as enterprises struggle to quickly answer natural-language analytical questions using traditional data stacks.
The database is compatible with PostgreSQL, an open-source system. According to Sichert, this compatibility keeps switching costs low and aligns with the logic large language models are trained on. Last year, the company secured a €5.3 million seed funding round, roughly $6 million, and launched both an on-premise Enterprise edition and a Community edition.
Sichert stated that a fully managed cloud version will help expand the startup's user base beyond large enterprises and prepare it to compete with industry players like Databricks.
CedarDB currently operates with a team of 14 people, though Sichert expects to expand
