Artemis III Crew Visits White House as 2027 Lander Test Looms
Astronauts assigned to NASA's Artemis III mission stepped into the Oval Office to pose for photos with President Trump, marking a familiar political ritual just six months after the Artemis II crew made the same trip.

Astronauts assigned to NASA's Artemis III mission stepped into the Oval Office to pose for photos with President Trump, marking a familiar political ritual just six months after the Artemis II crew made the same trip. This public appearance papers over a glaring aeronautical unknown. The crew is actively training for a roughly two-week mission slated for the summer of 2027, yet NASA still does not know which private lunar lander will actually accompany them into low Earth orbit.
Agency chief Jared Isaacman and the four-person crew, which includes representatives from NASA and the European Space Agency, are preparing for a complex orbital rendezvous. During the flight, NASA's Orion capsule must dock with SpaceX's Starship vehicle, Blue Origin's Blue Moon lander, or ideally both. These commercial systems are designed to carry future astronauts down to the lunar surface.
Yet whether either vehicle will be ready for the 2027 dress rehearsal remains an open question that threatens the timeline for the eventual moon-landing mission planned for 2028. Our read is that political pageantry at the White House moves at a predictable, scheduled pace, whereas heavy engineering governed by commercial rocket development does not.
NASA wants to fly both private landers on the upcoming test, but lingering uncertainty means the agency is essentially training for hardware that might not be on the launchpad when the clock runs out.
