- Ubiquitous Presence: AI systems impact daily lives with generative tools creating text, images, videos, and more.
- Industry Transformation: OpenAI rivals tech giants, reshaping the tech industry with billions invested in AI research.
- AI Spring: We are in an explosive period of progress, known as the ‘AI spring’.
In the landscape of technologies in 2024, Artificial intelligence has permeated mainstream culture as systems like ChatGPT from OpenAI understand and generate natural-language conversations on almost any topic with stunning fluency. Hundreds of millions of people are directly interacting with and benefiting from the power of AI in their daily lives, using generative tools that produce conversational text, images, videos, and more.
These technologies have rapidly reshaped the entire tech industry, propelling OpenAI to become a household name that rivals tech giants Google, Meta, and Microsoft. With billions of dollars worth of investment pouring into AI research and a deepening public familiarity with the capabilities of neural networks, we are living during an explosive period of progress that experts have dubbed the ‘AI spring’.
2) Super-Efficient Solar Cells: Harnessing the Power of Technologies in 2024
- Current Challenge: Mainstream silicon panels capture sunlight with efficiency below 25%.
- Perovskite Breakthrough: Ultra-thin perovskite crystals on traditional panels achieve over 30% solar-to-electricity conversion.
- Climate Impact: Mass production of these cells accelerates the transition to renewable power.
As the world grapples with climate change, solar power is one of the emerging technologies in 2024 with ultra-thin, light-sensitive perovskite crystals.
As nations struggle to curb carbon emissions and mitigate climate change, solar power installations are expanding at a blistering pace globally. However, the sunlight capture efficiency of most mainstream silicon panels still hovers below 25 percent, meaning the majority of those intense photons streaming in from the sun never get converted into useful electricity. That could soon change with the mass production of a new generation of ultra-thin, light-sensitive perovskite crystals layered on top of traditional panels.
Early lab experiments have achieved solar-to-electricity conversion rates surpassing 30 percent with these tandem devices, promising a significant boost in how much energy can be harvested from the same footprint of photovoltaic cells. If commercialized successfully, these highly efficient solar cells would markedly accelerate the world’s transition toward renewable power.
3) Apple Vision Pro: Pioneering Mixed Reality Technologies in 2024
- Mixed Reality Leap: Apple’s Vision Pro, a high-end headset, features micro OLED 4K displays with breakthrough resolution.
- Visual Prowess: Unparalleled crispness and clarity may redefine how users interact with mixed reality.
- App Ecosystem: The success depends on Apple delivering a must-have suite of apps.
In emerging era of technologies in 2024, after years of rumors and anticipation, Apple is poised to release its first major foray into mixed reality hardware for the consumer market with a high-end headset called Vision Pro. It leapfrogs existing products by packing two ultra-sharp micro OLED 4K displays with breakthrough resolution approaching the limits of the human eye, enabling visuals of unparalleled crispness and clarity. The big open question is whether Apple can pair this superior hardware with a must-have suite of apps to usher in an era of ubiquitous mixed reality. If previous product launches are any indicator, Apple may again transform how humans interact with information and their surroundings.Join our Whatsapp Community: Tech Bytes, Daily Dose of Tech Brilliance.
4) Weight-Loss Drugs: Revolutionizing Health with Technologies in 2024
- Global Crisis: Over 650 million obese adults worldwide pose a severe public health crisis.
- Revolutionary Medications: Semaglutide-based drugs Mounjaro and Wegovy achieve over 15% body weight reduction in trials.
- Health Impact: Beyond aesthetics, these drugs show potential for improving cardiovascular and metabolic health.
Technologies in 2024 are not only dealing with ai but aslo with health, with over 650 million obese adults globally, the world faces a roiling public health crisis according to the WHO. Now revolutionary new weight-loss medications like semaglutide-based Mounjaro and Wegovy are emerging as the most potent pharmaceutical therapies to combat obesity.
In clinical trials, participants have achieved over 15 percent body weight reduction on average after 68 weeks on these once-weekly injectable drugs. But beyond just fat loss for aesthetics, these treatments may also translate into dramatic improvements in cardiovascular and metabolic health based on evidence showing lowered risk of heart attack, stroke, and diabetes versus placebo. As healthcare providers gain experience with prescribing the novel drugs, they have the potential to tangibly extend and improve millions of lives.
5) Enhanced Geothermal Systems: the Future of Energy Technologies in 2024
- Clean Energy Potential: Geothermal energy is clean and renewable, but drilling costs have been a barrier.
- EGS 2.0: Enhanced geothermal systems using open-loop wells and advanced techniques tap into previously unviable sources.
- Global Impact: EGS projects could provide thousands of times the current world energy demand.
Geothermal energy, renewable energy technologies in 2024, derived from Earth’s underground heat is clean, renewable, and virtually limitless. But steep drilling costs and engineering hurdles have greatly hampered harnessing this bountiful energy source. Now a new class of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) using open-loop wells, hydraulic fracturing, and recycled water injections can cost-effectively mine geothermal heat from areas once considered unviable.
These technologies enable tapping harder subsurface rock at greater depths across more widespread geographies. As vivid demonstrations of such EGS 2.0 projects come online, with some estimates placing total global capacity at 100 terawatts – thousands of times current world energy demand – geothermal is positioned to form the planet’s energy backbone for millennia.
