OpenAI is expanding its advertising product lineup by adding visual display ads that will appear next to images generated by users in ChatGPT. The new ads will roll out later this month in the United States as part of an initial test group featuring products and services from specific advertisers.
OpenAI states that these ads will carry clear labels and will not affect the answers provided by ChatGPT. The company originally introduced ads earlier this year for free and low-cost subscription tiers and expanded them to India in August. Eventually, the company plans to target its 1.2 billion weekly users globally.
Alongside the display ads, OpenAI is expanding measurement tools and partnerships with firms such as AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, and others. It is also collaborating with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on geo-based experiments, and is developing brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. These updates aim to support ad-supported options for free and low-cost plan users.
