OpenAI launches Dots, its bubbly agentic avatar

At its Dev Day event on Tuesday, OpenAI launched Dots, a new personal agentic assistant powered by GPT-6 Astra. Described as remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything, Dots operate independently of specific hardware or interfaces to pursue user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal oversight.

Users can name and launch their primary dot starting Tuesday within ChatGPT, available to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and can also launch them from Codex. OpenAI envisions users deploying Dots for tasks such as monitoring customer feedback and implementing bug fixes, or rerunning analysis on experimental data.

Users can message Dots through Slack, Teams, and other organizational platforms, with text message support coming soon. OpenAI is working with Microsoft to integrate Dots into Agent 365 security controls, and envisions specialist Dots provisioned with specific identities, credentials, and tools, as well as teams of Dots working together over time.

Featuring a bubbly, cartoonish persona with a floating dot appearance, the software packages previously possible agentic harness functionality into a new offering aimed at independent actions and a more relatable AI experience.
