NASA will host a media teleconference to preview its contributions to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Martian Moons Exploration mission. The spacecraft is scheduled to launch from Japan on Monday, Oct. 19 Eastern Daylight Time, according to the agency. The briefing will feature key officials, including Lindsay Hays and Tom Statler from NASA Headquarters, along with instrument and hardware developers.
NASA’s contributions include the MEGANE gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer built by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, and a pneumatic surface sampler mechanism developed by Honeybee Robotics, a Blue Origin company. The agency also provides Deep Space Network communications and navigation support, plus funding for US scientists on the science team.
The mission aims to survey the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos after arriving at Mars in August 2027. The spacecraft will collect a surface sample from Phobos no earlier than December 2028 and return it to Earth in 2031.
