A spy satellite's sharp new view of China's secret space plane

A commercial satellite peering down from fifty-six miles away has captured an extraordinary portrait of China's secretive Shenlong space plane docked to an unidentified satellite. Released by a United States military intelligence agency, the image breaks years of fuzzy ground observations with a crystal-clear resolution of 4.5 centimeters per pixel.
The photograph clearly shows the robotic spacecraft with its payload bay doors standing wide open while linked to a neighbor whose solar panels remain unfurled. Those open doors are bound to fuel fresh international debate about what China's fourth mission is actually achieving in low Earth orbit. Beijing's space agency maintains that Shenlong exists solely to test technologies for affordable and peaceful round-trip space travel.
Yet independent trackers like LeoLabs have repeatedly caught the vehicle releasing mysterious sub-satellites during its current and past flights, behaviors that closely mirror proximity and rendezvous maneuvers used for inspection or interference. This cat-and-mouse game of orbital observation is hardly one-sided, as the United States similarly hides the true capabilities of its own robotic Boeing-built X-37B space plane.
When militaries suddenly start leaking high-resolution photographs of their most classified hardware, our read is that they are quietly sending a message across the orbital frontier.
These calculated leaks let rival powers flaunt staggering surveillance and rendezvous capabilities without ever having to spell out their operational limits.
