OpenAI-Backed Firm Acquires ADT for $7.6 Billion to Pivot Home Security

When a private equity firm built on artificial intelligence buys a traditional home security giant, the alarms ringing are less about burglars and more about software. Thrive Holdings has acquired ADT for a total equity value of $7.6 billion, pushing the deal's enterprise value to $15.3 billion. The buyer is a spin-out from Josh Kushner's venture capital firm Thrive Capital and counts OpenAI as both an investor and a partner.
OpenAI supplies these portfolio companies with AI models, technology, and forward-deployed engineers. ADT will anchor Thrive Holdings' smart home security business, though neither company has yet announced specific new products. Instead, they teased plans to heavily invest in and release AI-driven upgrades for millions of households. This takeover lands as tech giants race to claim the physical perimeter of the home.
Apple recently entered the home security market through collaborations with LG and Schneider Electric, while Amazon updated its camera lineup with new artificial intelligence features. Meanwhile, venture-backed startups are pitching roving robot dogs as autonomous roving guards. In that crowded landscape, ADT offers something pure software lacks: a massive installed base of physical hardware and doors already locked by millions of everyday users.
Our read is that OpenAI and its financial backers are no longer content selling chat interfaces through a browser window, choosing instead to buy real-world infrastructure to embed machine learning directly into the walls of the domestic market.
Whether homeowners want algorithmic upgrades guarding their entryways remains the multi-billion-dollar gamble.
Thrive Holdings currently holds over seventy-five companies with a stated mission to hold assets long-term and revitalize them using machine learning.
If they succeed, your next doorbell or security pane might not just record a package delivery, but actively reason about who belongs on the porch.
Watch whether regulatory scrutiny follows this collision of heavy capital, foundation models, and domestic surveillance, or if consumers simply trade traditional alarms for automated digital sentries.
