Nvidia is moving past chip sales and lease guarantees into a much heavier role by weighing a plan to co-sign billions in debt for a data center project. According to reports from The Information and Bloomberg, the chipmaker is discussing a residual value guarantee for Nscale's upcoming campus in West Virginia.

Under this setup, Nvidia would step in to take over the facility and find a new buyer if Nscale defaulted on construction payments. That kind of financial backstopping marks a clear shift from the company's usual support, which has historically focused on direct leases and hardware purchases. The stakes behind the talks are enormous.

Nscale's planned campus relies on a massive contract signed by Anthropic for its first building alone. Yet Nscale has struggled to scale its operations smoothly, operating only a fraction of its targeted advanced chips while facing construction hurdles that include local flooding from site runoff. At the same time, investor appetite for smaller cloud providers has cooled sharply as market pressures mount across the sector.

Our read is that Nvidia is essentially insuring its own future hardware demand by propping up the fragile infrastructure pipeline required to deploy its next-generation chips.

That infrastructure depends heavily on Anthropic, which faces its own financial scrutiny as it prepares for a public offering.

Blackstone has warned that the AI firm could land a below-investment-grade credit rating after going public, which would drive up its borrowing costs.

With major partners like Microsoft recently pulling out of other Nscale sites due to grid delays, keeping the West Virginia project afloat requires extraordinary measures.

Watch whether this debt guarantee sets a broader precedent for how chipmakers sustain their primary customers when traditional financing stalls.
