NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover captured a detailed panorama on August 11, 2026, corresponding to the 4,982nd Martian day of the mission, showing distant wind-carved cliffs known as yardangs. Taken at 8:30 a.m. local Mars time by the rover’s Mastcam, the six-image composite was processed without white balancing to preserve the morning appearance.
The yardang layer spans approximately 10 miles across the northwestern region of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile-tall mountain that Curiosity has climbed since 2014. The rover recently achieved a milestone by reaching 0.6 miles of elevation gain above the crater floor. According to Curiosity project scientist Ashwin Vasavada of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the formation mechanism of the yardang layer remains uncertain, with hypotheses including ancient volcanic ash deposits.
Currently in its fifth extended mission, Curiosity will drive through sulfate- and carbonate-enriched layers over the next year. Scientists anticipate reaching the base of the yardangs sometime in 2027, allowing the rover to use its robotic arm to gather data on the structures.
