General Motors announced at its GM Forward event that it remains fully committed to electric vehicles, autonomy, and vehicle quality. Executives outlined plans to expand its hands-free driving technology and introduce new artificial intelligence features. The company stated that its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-off system will expand across its lineup to include pickups and crossovers.
Sterling Anderson, GM’s head of product, noted the company tests this technology for one million miles monthly in virtual and real environments. GM also introduced OnStar AI, an in-car assistant designed to learn driver habits, explain vehicle alerts locally via a new central compute module, and manage tasks like ordering takeout.
Additionally, GM detailed its Gen-4 electric vehicle architecture utilizing lithium manganese-rich battery chemistry, which offers energy densities near nickel-manganese-cobalt cells at a lower cost comparable to lithium iron phosphate. Anderson acknowledged that customer trust is vital, especially given past scrutiny regarding data sales to insurance companies. To address privacy concerns, GM’s new infotainment system will feature end-to-end encrypted dash-cam video storage that remains unreadable by the automaker.
Rashed Haq, GM’s VP of Autonomous Vehicles, explained that the company's level 4 autonomous development focuses on safety and "roadcraft," aiming to avoid creating traffic hazards.
