Bluesky CEO Toni Schneider announced on Monday that the company has applied to create “.bsky” as an internet domain suffix, comparable to .com or .org. The application, which has not yet been approved, will be published by ICANN on October 7, 2026. The completion of the process is expected to take 18 to 24 months.

If approved, the suffix would allow users to shorten handles like @sarahp.bsky.social to domain names such as “sarahp.bsky,” potentially expanding user profiles into more comprehensive personal home pages. Bluesky stated it has not finalized how the domains will be requested, registered, or distributed, but confirmed it has no plans to sell or monetize them, citing a belief in the open web and user identity ownership.

COO Rose Wang noted that the initiative aligns with the platform's principle that individuals should own rather than rent their online presence.
