Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman Steps Into Leadership Role at NASA JPL
Reid Wiseman spent his career traveling to the edges of human capability, flying combat missions, living on the ocean floor, and commanding the Artemis II lunar flyby that carried humans farther from Earth than ever before.

Reid Wiseman spent his career traveling to the edges of human capability, flying combat missions, living on the ocean floor, and commanding the Artemis II lunar flyby that carried humans farther from Earth than ever before. Now, the emeritus astronaut and retired U.S. Navy captain is trading deep space cockpits for institutional leadership.
Caltech and NASA have named Wiseman as Caltech associate vice president and deputy director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, effective November 30. He takes on the role as the storied laboratory approaches its 90th anniversary of being founded by Caltech. In his new position, Wiseman will oversee laboratory operations, institutional planning, and act as the primary interface for national security programs.
Our read is that placing an experienced deep-space commander at the operational helm of NASA's premier robotics and deep-space center signals a deliberate push to tighten the feedback loop between crewed flight experience and robotic exploration. As Wiseman steps into the role, he brings firsthand operational judgment from managing safety for all human spaceflight missions during his tenure as NASA chief astronaut.
Wiseman joins a leadership team tasked with shaping the next era of exploration at a federally funded research and development center known for pushing the limits of humanity's reach.
Whether his frontline background translates into new operational efficiencies for robotic deep space missions remains the defining question for the lab's upcoming chapter.
