A Decade of Italian Night Skies Reveals the True Colors of the Moon
The moon looks white or pale gray in the mind of most stargazers, yet it actually wears a shifting wardrobe of colors that changes from night to night.

The moon looks white or pale gray in the mind of most stargazers, yet it actually wears a shifting wardrobe of colors that changes from night to night. Outside the filtering veil of our planet, the dark lunar surface shines in reflected sunlight as a simple brown-tinged gray.
Down here inside the air, however, physics bends that reflected light into a striking palette. Documenting this transition took ten years of patient work by an astrophotographer stationed across various locations in Italy. Her stacked collection reveals why a moon near the horizon frequently glows red or yellow, as a long path through the atmosphere scatters away blue wavelengths.
When the air carries larger dust particles instead, the moon can shift into a much rarer blue shade. Yet one particular purple phase remains an open question, likely born from a complex mix of atmospheric effects rather than a single cause. Our read is that projects like this turn everyday astronomy into a study of our own atmosphere's invisible chemistry.
When we look up at the lunar eclipse casting a faint red shadow across the cratered surface, we are not seeing the moon change at all.
We are watching every sunrise and sunset on Earth refracted simultaneously through the ring of our air.
Watch how atmospheric dust shapes our view of the cosmos, because every colorful moon tells a story about the sky we breathe.
