WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

Voyager Technologies' robotic Griffin-1 lunar lander has successfully completed a rigorous series of environmental evaluations at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The spacecraft prepared for its inaugural moon mission by facing simulations of extreme temperatures, heavy vibrations, and intense acoustic conditions. Testing took place inside a 25-foot-wide space simulator in Southern California.

Charles Whetsel, manager for the Exploration Systems Development Office at JPL, noted that the laboratory has supported lunar exploration since the mid-1960s Ranger program. Griffin-1 is scheduled to launch later this year under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative. The lander will transport more than 1,100 pounds of cargo to the lunar south pole, carrying science experiments and new technologies to test on the surface.

The payload includes Astrolab's FLIP rover, which will carry a supercomputer to explore the surface. Data gathered from these experiments will help prepare for a future crewed moon base that NASA aims to construct near the south pole over the next half-decade.
