Two former Y Combinator batchmates from 2016 are joining forces as the voice artificial intelligence sector rapidly consolidates. Deepgram announced it is acquiring Daily, the creator of Pipecat, which is one of the most popular open-source voice AI infrastructures available. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the companies confirmed that Pipecat will remain open-source and vendor-neutral.
Daily previously raised over sixty million dollars in funding, while Deepgram reached unicorn status earlier this year following a major Series C funding round. Pipecat was developed after Daily co-founder Kwindla Kramer began experimenting with AI-to-human communication when GPT-4 was released. The framework manages voice and video streams while reducing latency across speech-to-text, large language models, and text-to-speech pipelines.
Daily co-founder Kwindla Kramer noted that Deepgram CEO Scott Stephenson committed to keeping the technology open-source forever, which helped seal the agreement. Stephenson stated that the acquisition allows developers to build expressive agents by plugging in different models and a context bus, while also launching a new open protocol called the Real-Time Context Standard.
Our read is that keeping Pipecat open-source gives Deepgram a strategic vantage point in the middle of a fast-growing developer ecosystem, letting them capture traffic regardless of which underlying models clients choose.
That would mean infrastructure providers are learning they can win more by orchestrating the entire stack than by trying to lock users into proprietary models.
Watch whether this vendor-neutral orchestration strategy pressures competing infrastructure players to open up their own agent pipelines.
