Two Astronauts Finish the ISS’s Final Solar Array Upgrade in a Historic Spacewalk
Two astronauts are about to finish the ISS’s biggest power upgrade in a single spacewalk.
Two astronauts are about to finish the ISS’s biggest power upgrade in a single spacewalk. NASA’s Anil Menon and Canada’s Joshua Kutryk will install the eighth Roll‑Out Solar Array, the final piece of a five‑year plan that will raise the station’s output from 160 kilowatts to 215 kilowatts—a 30 percent jump.
The EVA marks the 100th U.S. spacewalk from the ISS and the first Canadian EVA since 2019, underscoring the international partnership that keeps the station alive. Menon and Kutryk are part of a six‑person crew that arrived on SpaceX’s Crew‑13 and a Russian Soyuz earlier this year.
Their work today will extend the ISS’s life and provide a template for future deep‑space power systems.
