The AI boom took over Climate Week and not everyone is happy about it

Artificial intelligence dominated New York Climate Week, dividing opinions within the climate tech sector as startups aligned with the trend to secure funding amid a challenging financial climate. While some industry participants raised concerns about natural gas power plants being built to supply data centers, energy-focused startups embraced the growth to survive financing hurdles caused by canceled federal grants and investor hesitation.

PitchBook data indicated that total venture deal value rose for four consecutive quarters, surpassing the $14 billion threshold in the first quarter of the year, driven largely by sectors benefiting from data center construction such as grid infrastructure, dispatchable energy, and the built environment. Although the singular focus caused some promising sectors to be overlooked and led large companies to temper public announcements regarding climate initiatives to avoid drawing the Trump administration's ire, entrepreneurs adapted their pitches to meet customer demand.

Many in the community viewed the current data center expansion as a temporary vehicle that could help startups establish durable businesses before refocusing entirely on their primary carbon-cutting missions.
