WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

Over the Halloween weekend, users waking up to maxed-out AI limits discovered a spooky reality behind conversational assistants. Without warning, weekly caps jumped to capacity overnight, locking out active participants. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed this sudden restriction was intentional rather than a software glitch, responding on X that the cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.

This squeeze arrives while the newly public company paints a remarkably different financial picture. In a recent filing, SpaceX reported that artificial intelligence generates over half of its income, helping its rebranded Super Intelligence division post a profit of four hundred thirty-one million dollars. That rare industry black ink would have run significantly deeper if not for a massive one billion two hundred million dollar acquisition cost related to Cursor.

Musk has previously celebrated the assistant as experiencing the fastest growth he has ever witnessed, yet heavy computational overhead is now forcing a hard brake on that momentum. Our read is that even highly profitable tech giants are finding the raw compute bills of mainstream consumer intelligence difficult to swallow without stricter rationing.

While Musk continues promoting the assistant for holiday shopping on social media, he has not clarified how long these tightened caps will remain in place for subscribers.

Watch whether stricter usage tiers become the industry standard as companies try to balance viral growth with punishing infrastructure expenses.
