NASA’s Curiosity rover photographed a sunrise illuminating distant wind-carved cliffs on Mars known as yardangs. The panorama captures the view on August 11, 2026, marking the 4,982nd Martian day of the mission. The rover used its Mastcam instrument to take six individual images. Mission teams stitched these photographs together after transmitting them back to Earth.
The resulting image bypassed standard white balancing to preserve the natural appearance of early morning light. Curiosity has been climbing the 3-mile-tall Mount Sharp since 2014, reading a layered geological record of Martian climate history. The yardang layer sits near the shoulder where the mountain's stacked layers currently end.
Scientists are studying how this specific layer formed because erosion may have occurred before it was laid down, creating a gap in the climate record. One theory suggests the layer consists of volcanic ash piles.
