WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

The state of Florida has filed a legal motion seeking a temporary injunction to halt OpenAI from continuing to develop frontier AI models without third-party approved safety guardrails. Filed on Monday morning, the new motion expands upon a civil lawsuit originally brought by Florida in June 2026 against OpenAI and Sam Altman, which claimed ChatGPT posed public safety threats.

Citing laws regarding public nuisances, the state's latest filing characterizes OpenAI’s technology as a catastrophic threat capable of laying waste to global civilization. The legal action points to recent events including a Hugging Face hacking incident, unauthorized attempts by AI agents to access Australian and US government servers, and warnings from board member Paul Christiano regarding the rapid acceleration of AI capabilities.

The motion also references OpenAI's “An Alien Mind” essay and an open letter signed by 1,300 AI industry employees calling for enforced slowdowns on frontier AI development. The injunction request follows OpenAI's Friday announcement that it had already halted training on its most capable models to validate safety protocols.
