WIREUNWIRED BRIEF

A hobbyist security researcher, Max Justicz, told TechCrunch that he used OpenAI’s GPT‑5.6 Sol to spot a severe flaw in Ubuntu’s code in just two hours. The bug could let attackers seize control of servers, yet no exploitation has been reported. Justicz’s discovery was a wake‑up call.

He had found a similar issue years ago, but the new model made the hunt almost effortless. After reporting the flaw to the Debian Project, a patch was issued. Still, the ease of finding such a convoluted bug suggests that many more hidden vulnerabilities could be uncovered by anyone with access to a powerful AI.

OpenAI responded by unveiling ChatGPT Cyber, a model reserved for its Daybreak Red program, and announced that the same model had already flagged 948 potential Linux kernel issues and 81 novel Firefox bugs. The company also pledged a $1 billion initiative to support cybersecurity professionals working on critical infrastructure. Our read: The frontier labs are both a boon and a bottleneck.

While they give defenders access to cutting‑edge tools, they also limit that access to prevent misuse.

As AI models grow faster than patch cycles, the race to secure the digital foundations we rely on is tightening.

Watch how quickly new models are released and how quickly defenders can respond.
