Pentagon Banks on Microwave Tech to Reshore Battery Production

Modern militaries run on batteries, which explains why the Department of Defense is stepping in where traditional markets hesitated. Twelve-year-old startup 6K just secured conditional approval for a 250 million dollar loan to build a factory in Tennessee. The plant will use a unique microwave-powered process to produce battery materials without relying on Chinese suppliers.
This lifeline arrives after a turbulent period for the North Andover, Massachusetts company. A previous 50 million dollar grant from the Department of Energy under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was canceled during a sweep of earlier awards, forcing the firm to reapply while electric vehicle market uncertainties pushed back its original opening timeline.
6K’s manufacturing method uses microwaves to heat metals into a plasma and deposit them directly onto a surface, cutting out multiple steps typically required to make cathode material. The company states this technique works across various chemistries, including lithium iron phosphate. That domestic manufacturing shortcut is precisely what the Pentagon wants to secure critical supply chains.
Our read is that national security imperatives are now successfully bypassing the funding bottlenecks stalling commercial electric vehicle startups.
When traditional grants vanish overnight due to political shifts, defense financing can step up to keep critical industrial infrastructure alive.
Watch to see if defense-backed manufacturing can scale fast enough to supply both military gear and commercial electric vehicles without relying on overseas partners.
