Cracks Emerge in the AI Spending Boom as Big Tech Burns Cash
Wall Street used to cheer every massive tech outlay for artificial intelligence as a bold bet on future growth, but that enthusiasm is fracturing.

Wall Street used to cheer every massive tech outlay for artificial intelligence as a bold bet on future growth, but that enthusiasm is fracturing. Major tech firms have outlined plans to spend more than $740 billion on capital expenditures this year for data centers and chips. Instead of rewarding the ambition, investors are fleeing as mounting debt and negative free cash flow threaten balance sheets.
The anxiety recently wiped out billions in market value across major tech stocks and dragged down the Nasdaq. Alphabet suffered its worst trading day on record after reporting negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion in the third quarter. The company is caught in a high-stakes paradox as its own AI Search feature cannibalizes the core advertising revenue that funds the expansion.
Amazon and Meta face similar cash crunches while funding compute-heavy features and cloud infrastructure that squeeze operating margins. Microsoft stands as the lone exception among the giants with positive free cash flow, though its slower spending stemmed from third-party capacity delays rather than intentional restraint. Our read is that the market is finally calculating the true replacement cost of legacy business models.
When the tools driving future growth actively undermine the profit centers paying the bills, continuous capital expenditure stops looking like investment and starts looking like a forced march.
That dynamic complicates upcoming public offerings like Anthropic, which needs immense compute power just as investors grow wary of unproven returns.
Watch whether these tech giants dial back their infrastructure targets or double down despite cratering stock prices.
If core revenue growth continues to slow while capital spending scales upward, the financial strain will ripple far beyond Silicon Valley.
