Snapdragon 8Gen4 to cost 322% more than Apple Bionic A18 Pro and 22.6% more than Mediatek Dimensity 9400

2024 is being seen as very special in terms of mobile System on chipsets . Records are being broken by both the top Android mobile SOC companies, Qualcomm and Mediatek. With the Android mobile SOC’s companies improving their chipsets, it is expected that the gap between Android flagship chipsets and Apple flagship Bionic chipsets is going to be far less as compared to a few years ago.

Where Qualcomm is yet to reveal its 2024 flagship chipset, Snapdragon 8Gen 4 or Snapdragon Elite , Mediatek on 9th launched its flagship mobile SOc, Mediatek Dimensity 9400, that already went past the 3 million mark on AnTuTu, showcasing its remarkable performance .

But, one thing that is creating heavy buzz in the market is the latest leaked pricing of these chipsets .

According to quite renowned Chinese leakster Digital Chat Station , the Snapdragon 8Gen 4 will cost somewhere around $190 and Mediatek Dimensity will cost somewhere around $155., i.e., the Snapdragon flagship chipset is going to cost 22.6% more than that of its Mediatek counterpart.

What surprised me the most was the cost of Apple’s latest bionic A18 Pro. According to the latest bill of materials revealed by the TD Cowen, the cost of the A18 pro processors powering the iPhone 16 Pro series is only $45, i.e., the Snapdragon counterpart is somewhat 322% costlier .

Also, where these Android SOc manufacturers have kept their this year flagships somewhat 20% more than their last year flagships , Apple has seen a merely 12.5% jump.

Apple’s Silicon is Mightier and Cheaper, But Why?

The lower price of the Apple silicon can be attributed to several reasons.

Apple Silicon is significantly cheaper compared to Qualcomm and MediaTek chips due to several key factors:

  1. Vertical Integration: Apple designs and optimizes its chips in-house, avoiding third-party markups.

  2. Economies of scale: Massive production volumes allow Apple to reduce per-unit costs.

  3. Custom Manufacturing: Long-term partnerships with TSMC enable cutting-edge chip production at lower costs.

  4. Optimised Hardware & Software: Apple Silicon is tailored for its devices, reducing unnecessary features and costs.

  5. No License Fees: Apple avoids Qualcomm’s licensing fees by gradually building its own modem technology. These factors explain why Apple Silicon is cheap, keeping iPhone production costs lower while maintaining high performance.

In summary Apple has been able to control the prices of their silicon while the prices of Android SOC is skyrocketing . Ultimately this will add on the prices of smartphones.

So with reducing performance gap between Apple Silicon and other mobile silicon , the price gap is increasing which will for sure make a hole in the consumer’s pocket.
