Qualcomm to Possibly Rename Snapdragon 8 Gen4 to Snapdragon 8 Elite

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen4 to be renamed as Snapdragon 8 Elite

October 2024 is going to be a wild ride for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile platform, as they will be launching their next generation Snapdragon mobile flagship processors on October 1st.

According to the leaks and rumours, Qualcomm may rename Snapdragon 8 Gen4 to Snapdragon 8 Elite or Snapdragon 8 Extreme to differentiate it from previous models.

Qualcomm’s Transition to Oryon CPU Design

Qualcomm has several reasons to do so.

One of the prime reasons to do so is the usage of self developed Oryon CPU designs in their upcoming Snapdragon flagship being dubbed Snapdragon 8 Gen4. This new mobile SOC is going to use Phoenix large and medium cores instead of ARM cores.

Previously Qualcomm had used these Oryon CPU’s in their Snapdragon® X Series PC platforms . Qualcomm calls Oryon as a custom-designed, record-breaking CPU, built on 64-bit architecture.

It is not the first time that any company has tried to ditch ARM cores for their self developed cores.

Previously, Samsung had tried to do so by utilising Mongoose cores in their Exynos chipsets. But even after releasing 4 generations of Mongoose cores , they were not able to compete with ARM cores . So, they ditched the Mongoose cores and started utilising ARM cores instead.

The Galaxy Note 10 was the last Samsung device to use their in-house cores .

Snapdragon 8 Gen4 Performance Benchmarks Leaked

While Samsung failed badly with their self developed cores , it seems that Qualcomm is not going to repeat the same mistake with their dubbed Snapdragon 8 Gen4. According to the geekbench leaked scores , it is for the first time that any Snapdragon chipset has scored a single core score of 2884 and a multicore score of 8840. With the multicore scores already cooking Apple’s latest bionic A18 Pro multicore scores , it seems that the Oryon CPU design is already kicking.

According to the leaks from SMartprix, the dubbed Snapdragon 8 Gen4 is coming in two variants, one normal variant (SM8750) and one performance-centric (SM8750P) variant.

Both of these variants are going to utilise TSMC’s 2nd generation 3nm process node.

Conclusion

However, it is not the first time QUalcomm has changed its naming convention for its flagship series mobile processors. Traditionally, Qualcomm followed a pattern with names like Snapdragon 800, 801, 835, 845, 865, and 888. In recent years, the company introduced the “Snapdragon 8 Gen” series with Snapdragon 8 Gen1, Gen2, and Gen3.

The expected new naming convention will reflect the new design and performance possibilities of the Oryon CPU.
