ToggleINTRODUCTION
We are in an era of geopolitics in which semiconductors have become the new oil. With their usage in almost every modern technology that we rely on in our daily lives, semiconductors have become the backbone of the modern digital era, thus affecting the security and sustainability of nations and pushing every country to strive for self-sufficiency.
TATA, a company trusted by every citizen of India, is leading this mission with significant investments.
According to a recent press release from Tata, Tata Electronics is planning on heavily investing in India’s first fab facility. A portion of this investment is also being supported by the central government.
In fact, the Indian government has introduced new incentive programs to attract more investments in the semiconductor space, including tax breaks, subsidies, and infrastructure support.
This fabrication unit from Tata Electronics will be established in Dholera, Gujarat, with its assembly and test facility being set up in Jagiroad, Assam.

Tata Electronics Collaborates with Tokyo Electron Limited
TATA has planned to invest ₹91,000 crore for its fabrication unit and ₹27,000 crore to establish its assembly and test facility.
To fast-track the process, Tata Electronics has collaborated with Japan-based Tokyo Electron Limited (TEL) to purchase equipment and services for its semiconductor fab.
Who is TEL?
TEL, or Tokyo Electron Limited, is a Japanese electronics and semiconductor company headquartered in Akasaka, Japan. Established in 1963, it is known for supplying equipment to fabricate integrated circuits (ICs), flat panel displays (FPDs), and photovoltaic cells (PVs).
Tata is planning to use TEL’s expertise in this sector to build a semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Furthermore, TEL has a history of collaborating with global semiconductor manufacturers, providing cutting-edge technologies like advanced etching systems and deposition tools. These technologies will play a pivotal role in ensuring the quality and efficiency of Tata’s semiconductor production processes.
How will TEL help Tata Electronics?
TEL will help Tata Electronics broadly in 4 ways:
Training for TATA Employees: TEL will provide specialised training to workers and engineers in TATA’s semiconductor group to improve the efficiency of manufacturing processes.
Research and Development: R&D is the most critical part of this industry. TEL will work towards ensuring the production of high-quality chips by improving processes and technologies.
Driving Innovation: This collaboration will provide India’s semiconductor sector with an opportunity to grow and bring innovation across multiple technologies.
Improving Engineering Services: The MoU between India and Japan will enable TEL to search for engineering talent in India, supporting its global production network.
CONCLUSION
In the global semiconductor market, this collaboration between TATA Elctronics and Tokyo Electron Limited will help India gain a significant presence in this billion-dollar industry. The automotive sector, which heavily relies on semiconductor equipment for EVs, will also experience growth. This Tata-TEL partnership will enhance India’s capabilities to expand its electronics and technology sectors.
